Should you opt for a Miniature Schnauzer as a family pet, you will be bringing a truly delightful little dog into your home. He should be sweet natured, have a happy outlook on life, be amenable, fun loving, inquisitve and engaging. All these wonderful character traits mean that your little canine friend will need your company. You must be able to give him your time or he will be miserable.
Minis love to play, to socialise, to engage with the world and everything in it. You must provide adequate stimulation, exercise, training and affection if he is to fulfil his potential.
The breed requires regular grooming and you must either get the training and equipment you need to do it yourself or have the resources to get a professional groomer to attend to your pet's needs.
A Miniature Schnauzer might be a companion dog, but he is in truth, a big, enthusiastic dog in a little package. He needs to get out and about every day for exercise and social interraction, he needs his family members to be around for him, he needs the stimulation of regular training, play and exercise. He will not take up much space in your home, but he needs a place of his own (a sanctuary) in the heart of the family, especially if you have small children.
This little chap will not eat much and you should never let him get plump. However, he requires good quality feed that is not too high in fat content. We feed our Minis raw meat, bone and minced vegetables and they thrive.
